I have been in charge of Sculpture Studio I at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice since October 2012.
The activities at the studio focus on searching for the ‘essence’ of space outside emotionality, narrativeness and illusory reference to what is beyond sculpture.
The first step in any spatial visualization is learning to operate space, organize rhythm, proportions and harmony of form. It is important to realize that sculpture in the traditional understanding as representational, relates artistic order to some external reality. However, form itself has meaning. In practice, the way to obtain a specific form-in-space is to approximate shape to shape, block to block, necessary medium to another necessary medium and the total sculpture space to the surrounding space to achieve the one possible unity of form.
After completing the course, students will have broadened theoretical knowledge about
current spatial activities in the arts. Through the knowledge of different means of expression
available to contemporary art, they acquire the ability to shape space, selecting the
best medium to visualize the desired effect.
