The Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice began its independent existence on September 1, 2001, after forming part of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow for almost fifty years. Initially comprising a single Faculty of Graphics, Painting and Design, now trains young artists and designers at the Faculty of Design (Graphic Design and Industrial Design) and the Faculty of Art (Graphic Art and Painting), in full-time and part time (evening or weekend) mode. The Academy values the tradition of art and design. At the same time, it explores various issues of contemporary visual culture, communication media and most recent image creation technology. The educational offer is supplemented by plein-air artistic and design workshops organized in cooperation with institutions from Poland and abroad, as well as internships providing an excellent opportunity to confront one's skills with the requirements of the labour market. The Academy oversees the Rondo Sztuki Gallery, located at the very centre of the city, which shows both the works of well-established authors, and students/graduates at the beginning of their professional career.
