Drawing Studio I
The program of the Studio is an attempt at penetrating the problems of creative drawing on the basis of an anatomical study of the human form. Creative drawing as a natural consequence of a study drawing is a deepened process of nature’s study, in which selective observation, comparison of qualities as a consequence of interpretation and searching for one’s own graphic definition are the basis. An elementary problem of creative process is the issue of composition, that is a conscious arrangement of the drawing surface, broadening the medium, searching for one’s own space. Interpretation as a process of transferring qualities from the object of observation to the author’s expression is a creative experience with technical, aesthetic and humanist values. It allows students, apart from their individual search for formal features and character, to face the problem of comparing qualities, that is shaping their creative personalities through asking questions, posing dilemmas and solving doubts.
A feature that lends a special character to the Studio is black as a color and graphic category, the analysis of its nature and versatility – from its complex graphic structure, through value, decorative qualities, projection of a gesture, the author’s mark, illusion of depth, to finding its new meanings, expressive, symbolic and metaphysical. The awareness of creative process as a dialectic chain, its complexity beginning with observation, filtering reality, the choice of concept, nature of work during the process, its dynamics, conceptual and formal changes during the process of the work’s “becoming” all the way through the end of the process in the form of an intentional object and the autonomous existence of the work, its proper debut with all its consequences and responsibility for it – these are the basic determinates of our creative development.
Understanding this chain of relations in the creative process constitutes the meaning of our search in the ethical and aesthetic realm. The awareness of creative process grows out of reflexivity and contemplation of art as a condition in the search for ideal values, which could not exist without opening up to the broadest possibilities of experiencing and search for truth.
